Before we start today I would just like to remind you that I'm only writing this to give you my opinion for entertainment purposes. Please try not to get to bent out of shape but as always I look forward to your comments.
In the 2010-2011 college football season the Texas Longhorns football program made 104.5 million dollars and their total sports program made 163.3 million according to Business Insider. Now in that particular year they were the top earner for all college football. The number 25 spot for that same season went to USC. Their football program make 35.4 million and their total take from sports was 84.1 Million.
Most of us would agree that colleges are there to better our lives and a lot of colleges do that through providing education and a sense of responsibility, Research, Pride and a lot of other things that make the world a better place. I just want to say that colleges are not a corporation that produce products and their sole purpose is not to make money. Now you may say that college is a business but I would say it's ok to make money even a lot of money but not at the determent of their students. Just by them choosing to educate our young adults justifies us to hold them to a higher standard.
Now you could say that going to college isn't mandatory so they should be able to do whatever they want but I would argue that the work force has demanded college educations for positions that don't even come close to needing a college education to perform. Why, because the can. So many people go to college now that freshman classes in some colleges reported a 27% increase. So that means they probable will take that money and build better facilities or maybe lower their tuition. The answer most of the time is no.
As a matter of fact most colleges raise their tuitions every year. Now if your a parent of a college child and they are lucky enough that you can pay or help with their tuitions I would imagine you have seen the bill. If you've never seen a college bill then you have a big surprise waiting for you. I could go through each charge and tell you what that is for but I'm not going to do that because I don't want you to start crying. Just let me say that tuition is a big part of the bill but if your student stays on campus and eats on campus your bill is going to be a little bit larger by well . . . . . . . a lot.
Some colleges require all freshman to stay on campus and to be on a food program. I won't mention specific colleges but when you are on a meal plan you have to use all the money on your account or it will be lost meaning the college will be keeping your money and providing nothing in return. In some cultures that's considered stealing. I know one student and their friends eating steak and lobster at the end of the year to spend their accounts to zero.
I do think freshman staying on campus and having a meal plan is a good idea but we have had computer programs for years that could easily roll that money over or return that money to a account to pay for other things. If a college cant figure this out then what are they doing teaching our future generations.
Now lets talk about dorms. If you have ever stayed in a college dorm you will know that most of the colleges dorm buildings are old and have had updates through the years to help the students have a better life. In a dorm room you have anywhere from two to four students in a very small outdated space. If you live in a new building your going to pay a lot more and that includes most of the time a community kitchen and community bathrooms. If you took the average cost of four students living on campus and oh yah I forgot about the parking pass they have to purchase to have a car they could live in a large modern house with a swimming pool and hot tub.
When a lot of colleges build a new building they won't even start that building until they have raised enough donations to pay for the whole project. That's right there not even going to provide the money to upgrade the college but you can bet they are going to charge you to use it. Really I'm just mad that I didn't think of this. Does anyone want to start a college. You know that a lot of students that get their Doctors Degree end up being Professors. Most colleges start them out at about 35,000 to 55,000 a year. Isn't that a kick in the teeth.
I could list many other ways that colleges nickel and dime students into the poor house. My daughter was approved for a college loan and the low interest rate of 8%. 8% ARE YOU CRAZY and if your student loans are not paid on time they come after you not like in the old days when you paid 1% and you just paid what you could when you could. So lets say you are lucky enough to win a scholarship that strangely enough most of these don't come from the college either all though they do provide them and for that I applaud them. Now lets say you go to a college in the Midwest, that's a good thing because tuition is more reasonable if I can use that term loosely. When you finish your four year degree you will owe between 14,000 to 28,000 at 8% interest. Without that generous scholar ship that I have factored into this scenario you can double that. Is that the kind of start in life that we want our young people to have. Sounds like indentured servitude to me.
I couldn't agree more. I've seen the dorms and purchased the meal plan. These kids will go out in the world with a college degree they will owe on for the next 20 years of their life. It's an out rage!!!

DeleteLol whatever.
DeleteDon't get me wrong, I am grateful for the opportunity of an education but I know it can come at a lower cost. Colleges should be here first and foremost to help the students
